Do women wear ties?

• For centuries, ties have been the domain of men. Men have worn them to look good, and to advance themselves in the business world. If a man wears a tie it signifies many ideas at once. It shows that he is there for business, and professional, and in some cases it even shows that he is virile. But over the last few years, more women have started to wear ties. This has been a growing trend and it hasn’t always been well received by people. But, as it happens, women wearing ties is becoming more fashionable and many women are able to pull it off quite easily. In this article we will look at the issue of women wearing ties, and whether or not it is appropriate.

  The first thing we have to be clear on is that women do wear ties. And they’re wearing them more now than they ever did. But there is one crucial distinction we have to make. Women wearing ties only works really well if the tie they are wearing is not seen as a conventional business tie. This means they are not wearing a tie for business. For example a sober, professional tie. Women really carry ties off well if they wear ties that are colourful and a little more distinctive and quirky. This means that the idea of a woman wearing a tie is instantly linked to something that is more fun, and not professional and business-like. This is the way it is, women wear ties only if they stand out from the crowd. In fact they are wearing a tie to stand out, and this means that the tie they wear has to be very distinctive. This is when a woman wearing a tie works best.

  And that’s where the distinction is important really. Women who wear ties for fashionable reasons generally pull it off really well. If they wear a jacket that has links to the business world, and then a fun and quirky tie with it, it generally looks good.

  Some common sense

  However, there is some common sense when people say that a woman should not wear a tie. Obviously, a woman can wear what she wants, and if she’s an attractive woman or a powerful woman and is confident in herself it doesn’t matter what she wears. But the tie is meant for the male world, and it always will have these connotations. This is why a tie seems perhaps even a little sexier on a woman, because it has the power aspect attached to it.

  As a general rule of thumb, if a woman is to wear a tie she must wear one that is distinctive and over the top. This then justifies her wearing it. In the workplace, it is very rare for a woman to wear a tie as part of a work uniform. Some do, but they are perhaps not the clearest on their fashion needs. Men are meant to wear ties as part of history. It may happen that women end up wearing ties in the future as part of corporate life, the problem is, we can’t really see a woman wanting to wear a tie anyway, unless it is part of a fashion statement.
