Different Tie Knots

But ties are actually one of the most versatile ways in which a man can accessories his outfit and stand out from the crowd. What’s more, they don’t need to be reserved for the work environment or formal occasions.

This isn’t to say that any tie will do. Ties, like any other accessory or item of clothing, come in various sizes, styles and designs, and they need to be matched to the outfit. For casualwear, this means one thing: slim-fitting ties. They don’t have to be ultra-skinny, but they shouldn’t be more than two or three inches at their widest point either. Look out for solid dark ties, which are super versatile, or fun striped ties. As a rule of thumb the tie should be mostly darker than the shirt.

    Summer Ties Knots

The next question of course is, which knot to use? Many men only know how to knot their ties one way – the classic four-in-hand knot. This is deservedly popular as it’s one of the easiest and quickest knots to tie. It looks great with casual summer clothes, softer shirts, or with formal shirts with a narrow collar. The tie simply needs to be placed around the neck, the wide part crossed over the narrow part, and then the wider end folded around and pulled through the noose, before being adjusted.

But the four-in-hand isn’t the whole story. Let’s go back to weddings and other formal occasions. Together with the workplace, these are the times when you want to look your smartest and most respectable. And this is where a Windsor knot, or a half-Windsor, comes in. Windsor knots involve a little more folding and looping, but the result is a wider and more symmetrical knot. Half-Windsors convey the same smart approach but require a little less effort.

Another alternative is the Pratt, or Shelby, knot. This is looser than the Windsor and not as complicated to tie, and the size is somewhere between the Windsor and four-in-hand. It’s a good option for smart designer ties, whether they are worn casually or formally.
