Ties are funny things, and many men feel that they are also quite personal. It’s quite easy for a man to walk into a shop and say ‘that’s my kind of tie’. This is because men get into a kind of routine with the ties they wear. For example, if you work in the corporate world, you’ll buy a certain type of tie. This tie will be conservative and calming in its look, and this will match perfectly the corporate feel.
However, if you are younger perhaps, more fashion conscious and prone to wear more casual attire, you may well choose ties that are a little less conventional. This means spots and stripes and quirkiness. You may even choose a skinny tie that goes well with your clothing. There are many different variations on the tie, and the majority of these variations, including a skinny tie, only really came into effect as part of the public consciousness in the 20th century.
Developing a style
For a man to be able to say ‘that’s my kind of tie’ he will have had to spend years developing a style with his ties. This will mean that he has developed an extensive wardrobe of ties, and a certain taste. You’ll find that some men favour loud and garish ties as part of their style uniform. There is at least one famous newsreader on British TV who always wears loud ties with quite conventional suits. He’s known for it, and he has now become a bit of a style icon for it. If you can pull off a nice loud tie, go for it.
The majority of men tend to buy ties that complement their shirts and their suits. You will find a wardrobe in their home that is full of similar types of tie. This is the style they have become accustomed to, and they can quite easily say that this is their kind of tie. Ties tend to blend into one if people are working in offices, for example. You can’t rock the boat too much with your choices.
But still, tie manufacturers continue to bring out new designs every year. It’s almost as if the scope and variety in the ties and the patterns that you can have is limitless. It will be interesting to see what will come in 2014, and what new styles of tie designs are available. As it stands, it seems like an endless palette.
